I know from experience.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Years ago, I had been knocked down the stairs too many times.\u00a0 My then husband had hit me in the head too many times.\u00a0 He yelled at me abusively too many times and did other things to hurt me emotionally.\u00a0 I was diagnosed with traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder.<\/p>\n<p>My life as I had known it was changed forever.\u00a0 My brain did not work as it had before and I struggled to function.\u00a0 Finally, a counselor suggested lifestyle changes to improve my PTSD symptoms.\u00a0 I took her advice and my PTSD became much more manageable.<\/p>\n<p>She suggested these lifestyle changes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>Join a peer support group.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It was hard to join a PTSD peer support group.\u00a0 I thought that no one there would be able to help me. I struggled to meet new people.\u00a0 At first I could not trust others or open up in meetings.<\/p>\n<p>But after a few weeks I began to feel relieved that I had joined a peer support group.\u00a0 I realized I was not the only person who felt this way. I also made friends with other survivors.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>Exercise.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I walked and jogged and rode my bicycle.\u00a0 The exercise gave me a break from my feelings.\u00a0 It distracted me from painful memories.\u00a0 After a few weeks of exercise, I began to have more self-esteem.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I felt more in control of my life.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>Change neighborhoods.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I felt my world was an unsafe place.\u00a0 I was afraid my ex would find me and hurt me again.\u00a0 My counselor wanted me to move.\u00a0 I did move, and I also got a guard dog.\u00a0 I felt much safer.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>Stay away from drinking and drugs.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>She also warned me about drinking and drugs.\u00a0 Drinking alcohol and using drugs would make my symptoms worse in spite of treatment.<\/p>\n<p>I decided to stay away from drugs and alcohol.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>Spend more time with loved ones.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>She told me that spending time with loved ones would improve my PTSD symptoms.\u00a0 So I spent as much time as possible with friends and loved ones.
