{"id":5428,"date":"2017-12-12T17:51:25","date_gmt":"2017-12-12T22:51:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bobbiejrae.com\/home\/?p=5428"},"modified":"2020-04-27T15:14:06","modified_gmt":"2020-04-27T19:14:06","slug":"crazy-world-needs-encouraging-words-bj-rae-eagle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.bobbiejrae.com\/home\/crazy-world-needs-encouraging-words-bj-rae-eagle\/","title":{"rendered":"What Our Crazy World Needs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Yes, we can change our crazy world for the better!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5430 size-medium\" title=\"near a river, crazy world, bj rae, encouraging words\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bobbiejrae.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/world-shaped-like-a-heart-300x275.jpg\" alt=\"near a river, crazy world, bj rae, encouragement \" width=\"300\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.bobbiejrae.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/world-shaped-like-a-heart-300x275.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.bobbiejrae.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/world-shaped-like-a-heart.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Have you noticed that the world seems to have gone crazy lately?\u00a0 Mass murders, sexual harassment, assaults, and internet crimes&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Snowed in all day, I have been thinking about life when I was growing up, how life is different now, and what is missing in our crazy world now.\u00a0 I believe the missing element is empathy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Men who sexually harass and assault women would probably not do this if they had empathy for women.\u00a0 The young immigrant who tried to blow up a tunnel in NYC a few days ago probably would not have tried that if he had empathy for others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Empathy means understanding how someone else feels.\u00a0 Empathy results in more concern for others\u2019 welfare and well-being, and therefore it would reduce the violence and sexual assaults the news media constantly announces to the world. We cannot change other people, only ourselves, so perhaps we should begin by being empathetic ourselves and let our positive words and actions inspire the rest of the world to change.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">How can we develop empathy in our own lives and in our own homes?\u00a0 Here are a few ways to do this.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>\n<h4>Counter prejudices with commonalities.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Men and women can have negative prejudices about each other.\u00a0 Instead of thinking about your prejudice toward the stranger of the opposite sex sitting next to you, think about what you might have in common instead.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>\n<h4>Try another person\u2019s life.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is simple.\u00a0 Learn more about what someone else does or believes in his or her life.\u00a0 As John Dewey said, \u201cAll genuine education comes about through experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>\n<h4>Plant the seeds of empathy in our children.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Canada has a pioneering movement called Roots of Empathy that teaches school children about empathy.
