Not $15 to buy some lunch, but the hundreds or thousands of dollars someone wants to borrow.<\/p>\n<p>If so, did it work out for you?<\/p>\n<p>Did your borrower ever pay you back?\u00a0 Or are you still waiting for that money to somehow return to you, hopefully with a small amount of interest?<\/p>\n<p>When people you know ask you for a personal loan, always remember loaning money can create more problems than it solves.<\/p>\n<p>Trust me, I speak from experience.<\/p>\n<p>When someone needs help, pitching in to help just feels good, like the right thing to do.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 For several reasons.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>Wanting to help others.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is natural to want to help a person you know when they are in need and you can help.\u00a0 It makes you feel good to help them.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>Feeling guilty about saying no.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you say no, your no will weigh down your conscience.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>Maintaining the relationship.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not helping will cause tension in the relationship because you were not willing to help someone in his or her time of need.<\/p>\n<p>All of these reasons show that you want the best for the person and the relationship.\u00a0 But more often than not the borrower does not repay you and this causes tension within your household, with your loved ones.\u00a0 Your loved ones do not understand why you loaned money to someone you had reason to believe would not pay you back. Also, when the borrow does not repay you, there is tension between you and your borrower.<\/p>\n<p>Lending money to friends and family rarely works out because it changes the dynamic of the relationship.\u00a0 The relationship changes from a relationship between family and peers to a relationship between creditor and debtor.\u00a0 This new relationship becomes very tense when the debtor does not repay you.<\/p>\n<p>That kind of tension is not good for the entire family or group of peers.\u00a0 It breeds resentment.<\/p>\n<p>So how do you handle the situation when someone close to you asks you to borrow money?\u00a0 The best answer is \u201cno\u201d.<\/p>\n<h4>Instead of loaning money, try these steps.<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Offer to give the person in need as much as you can afford to give. But if you know the person has been irresponsible in some way and you suspect he will not use the money wisely, this may not be a good idea.<\/li>\n<li>Give advice. If you know of a good solution to the money problem without digging the person\u2019s debt deeper, help them work through the situation and plan to come out better on the other side.<\/li>\n<li>Refer them to peer to peer lending sites.
